ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: We clarified the extent to which white rice (WR)-based carbohydrate diets affect body weight and metabolic parameters in rats. Methods: In this experimental study, a male Sprague Dawley (n=32) rats fed with WRbased CHO diet in two different proportions of total energy intake (TEI 55% moderate-CHO (MCHO, n=8) and 65% High-CHO (HCHO, n=8)) or high-fat diet (HFD, n=8) were compared with rats maintained on standard pellet diet (SD, n=8) for eight weeks period. Carbohydrate sources in the HFD and SD were mainly based on cornstarch (25% of amylose). Outcomes measures include body weight and metabolic parameters. Results: At baseline, body weight and metabolic parameters (fasting plasma glucose, insulin, and triglyceride levels) were comparable in all rats. Despite higher daily caloric intake in rats fed with HFD (103.9±3.0) than the other diets, no significant differences in body weight between groups after 8 weeks of study. However, rats’ feds with WR-based CHO diets (both moderate and high carbohydrates) had higher fasting blood glucose (MCHO=12.8±1.6, HCHO=16.9±2.4) and triglycerides level (MCHO=1.2±0.0, HCHO=1.3±0.0) than rats in cornstarch-based HFD and SD (p<0.05). Both HFD and HCHO had higher fasting insulin than MCHO and SD (p<0.05), but the homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was significantly higher in WR-based CHO diets (both moderate and high carbohydrates) than the rats in cornstarch-based HFD and SD (p<0.05). Conclusion: A WR-based CHO diet exhibits higher fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, and insulin resistance state than a high-fat diet without a significant impact on body weight. These findings may explain the growing incidence of diabetes in Asia and worth studying further.

ABSTRACT

@#Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effectiveness, health related quality of life (HRQoL) and cost effectiveness of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) compared to topical anti-glaucoma medications in step-up treatment of patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). Methods: Seventeen POAG patients with suboptimal IOP control despite pre-existing topical medications were subjected to adjunct SLT (50 applications 180 degrees) or second line medical therapy. Current medications were continued, and patients were followed up for 6 months for degree of intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering. HRQoL was assessed using Glaucoma Quality of Life 36-item (GlauQoL-36), Assessment of Quality of Life-7D (AQoL-7D) and Vision related Quality of Life (VisQoL). Costs involved were calculated and compared to the effect (IOP reduction) achieved in each arm. Results: Ten patients were in the SLT group and 7 in the topical medication (MED) group. Mean baseline intraocular pressure (IOP) was 18.90±3.48mmHg in SLT group and 15.57±2.23mmHg in MED group. Mean reduction of IOP was 4.30±1.64mmHg in SLT group and 2.71±2.56 mmHg in MED group at 6 months which was not statistically significant (p=0.14) between two groups. All the HRQoL questionnaires did not show significant changes in the groups or between groups when compared baseline with 6-month post treatment (p-values ranging from 0.247 to 0.987). For every 1mmHg reduction in IOP, cost involved in MED group (RM53.61) was 165% of the cost involved in SLT group (RM32.56). Discussion and Conclusion: This study has shown that SLT was as effective clinically and tolerable as topical anti glaucoma medications and was possibly more cost effective in the step-up treatment of patients with POAG at 6 months follow- up.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To understand the status and trend of heavy metal indicators of drinking water in rural schools in different regions of Shaanxi Province, so as to provide scientific basis for safety of drinking water in rural schools.@*Methods@#In 2017-2019, 697 rural school water supply projects in Shaanxi Province were tested for heavy metal indicators in the peripheral water. According to the sanitary standard for drinking water (GB 5749—2006), five heavy metal indicators, including arsenic, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, lead and mercury, were analyzed and evaluated in different years and regions.@*Results@#A total of 2 298 valid water samples were collected and analyzed in 3 years. Except that lead and mercury are all up to standard, the standard rates of other heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium and hexavalent chromium were 98.83%, 99.91% and 96.95% respectively. Compared with the Northern Shaanxi plateau and Qinba mountain area, the standard rate of water arsenic in Guanzhong Plain was lower (χ2=5.67, 13.59,P<0.01). The standard rate of hexavalent chromium was the highest in Qinba mountain area, followed by Guanzhong Plain, and the lowest in Northern Shaanxi plateau (χ2=20.48, 17.05, 48.32, P<0.01). Two samples of cadmium exceeding standard were from the Northern Shaanxi plateau.@*Conclusion@#The heavy metal index of drinking water in rural schools in Shaanxi Province exceeds the standard, which has obvious regional characteristics. We should focus on the harm of arsenic, hexavalent chromium and other heavy metals to the health of students in the Northern Shaanxi plateau and Guanzhong Plain. Cadmium and mercury in drinking water in local areas should be paid continued attention. Safety of drinking water in schools should be ensured from the aspects of water source selection and water treatment technology.

ABSTRACT

@#AIM: To analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with Peters' anomaly(PA)in Chinese, and to study the variation of PITX2 and PAX6 genes in patients with PA, so as to provide basis for clinical diagnosis and pathogenesis of this rare ophthalmopathy.<p>METHODS: Fifteen patients with PA were selected from 2016 to 2019 in Changzhou No. 2 People's Hospital and Changzhou No. 3 People's Hospital, and the detailed clinical data were collected. Genomic DNA was prepared from venous leukocytes after obtaining the consent of the patients and their family members. The coding regions and the flanking exon-intron junctions of the PITX2 and PAX6 genes were amplified by polymerase-chain reaction(PCR)and subsequently analyzed by direct sequencing. Variations detected were further evaluated in any unaffected member and 80 normal controls by HA-SSCP. Analyzing and comparing the mutation of PITX2 and PAX6 genes and the related phenotypes in Chinese patients with PA.<p>RESULTS:Sequence analysis of the PITX2 gene revealed one novel mutation c.296delG(P.R99fsx56)in fifteen patients with PA. Nucleotide sequence analysis showed that this mutation led to the functional abnormal of this gene. The clinical characteristics of the mutant patient were analyzed, the right eye of the patient was diagnosed as Axenfeld-Rieger syndrome(ARS), and the left eye was diagnosed as Peters'anomaly. However, the mutation was not found in the family members of the patient's parents and unrelated normal controls, and therefore it was a de novo mutation. No mutation was found in PAX6 gene mutation screening.<p>CONCLUSION: A novel PITX2 gene mutation was detected in 15 patients with PA, which was the first report of PITX2 gene mutation in a patient with Peters'anomaly complicated with ARS in China. The results enrich the mutation spectrum of PITX2 gene and further clarify the clinical characteristics of PA complicated with ARS. All these will be useful foundations for clinical diagnosis and pathogenesis. Furthermore, it enriches our knowledge of genotype-phenotype relationship of PA. In addition, our results may provide basis for the functional and genomic study of the pathogenesis of the disease in the future.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: For the Ficat Ⅱ of femoral head necrosis especially with osteoporosis, core decompression with or without acellular tissue engineered bone can result in a higher incidence of femoral head collapse. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical effect of core decompression plus implantation of acellular tissue engineered bone with titanium rods in the treatment of early necrosis of the femoral head. METHODS: Thirty-five hospitalized patients with early necrosis of the femoral head (40 hips) were enrolled in the study and assigned into a observation group (15 cases with 20 hips, including 10 hips of Ficat I, 10 hips of Ficat Ⅱ) and a control group (20 cases with 20 hips, including 11 hips of Ficat Ⅰ, 9 hips of Ficat Ⅱ). Core decompression plus implantation of acellular tissue engineered bone with titanium rods were conducted in the observation group, while Bouche decompression with implantation of acellular tissue engineered bone was done in the control group. All the patients were followed up for 1 year. Visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Harris hip function score, and progression in necrosis of the femoral head were compared between two groups. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: VAS scores and Harris scores at 1-year follow-up in both groups showed better outcomes (P < 0.001). At the end of 1-year follow-up visit, the Harris score was significantly higher in the observation group than the control group (P<0.05), while there was no difference in the mean VAS scores between the two groups (P > 0.05). For Ficat II patients, the excellent/good rate in the observation group was higher than that in the control group at the last follow-up (80% vs. 40%, P<0.05). According to the Ficat staging, the effective rate in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (90% vs. 80%, P<0.05). During the postoperative 1-year follow-up visit, Ficat Ⅰ patients presented with better repair of lesions, no degeneration of the hip joint, and no subchondral bone collapse. Overall, it is an effective treatment for early necrosis of the femoral head by core decompression plus implantation of acellular tissue engineered bone with or without titanium rods; however, co-implantation with titanium robs can show better short-term outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the disease types incurring poverty, patient population layout, and cost burden by poor households due to illness. Methods During the time August 17-24,2017, App questionnaires were used onsite for data survey at 2 824 poor hourseholds in Nanyang city of Henan province, in order to learn the impacts of the poverty-causing diseases on the labor capacity of the patients and the cost burdens. Such methods as descriptive analysis, rank sum test and correlation analysis were used for data analysis. Results The survey found that 61.79 percent(1 745 households) of the poor households turned poor by illness, most of them aged 40 to 60 years old. The ten disease categories, namely cerebrovascular diseases, malignant tumor, ischemic heart diseases and mental diseases, constitute top disease causes of poverty. These diseases significantly damage their labor capacity, up to 37.67% of them totally disabled. The self-paid expenses of the patients per year accounted for 57.22% of the total annual expenses. Conclusions Medical insurance policies need to elevate the scope and efforts of medical compensation;public health services need to improve health promotion and health education; government supervision needs to be enhanced to keep minimizing patients′disease burdens.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we explored the effects of long-term consumption of a high-sugar high-fat diet on glucose tolerance and insulin resistance in rats. Rats were fed with either standard rat chow diet (NC group) or high-sugar high-fat diet (HSHF group) for 16 weeks. The HSHF group showed significantly higher fasting insulin level than NC group. Following intraperitoneal glucose challenge, blood glucose and insulin levels in the NC and HSHF groups increased. However, the magnitude of the response in NC group was low compared to HSHF group. Insulin resistance was higher in HSHF group and insulin sensitivity decreased significantly (P <0.05) in HSHF group in contrast to NC group. Low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride (TG)/high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) levels showed significant increase in HSHF group, while triglyceride and total cholesterol levels did not show any difference. The study demonstrated that feeding high-sugar high-fat diet to the experimental Sprague-Dawley rats for 16 weeks increased possibility of insulin resistance in them but did not turn them hyperglycemic or diabetic. Thus, they prove to be a suitable animal model to explore various aspects of insulin resistance.

ABSTRACT

Objective To explore whether there is a visual spatial attention span deficit in children with Chi-nese language learning disability and the characteristics of brain electrophysiological dynamic change. Methods Adop-ting event-related potentials ( ERP ) technology and levels of visual spatial attention span with fixed location cuing pa-radigm were used to explore the characteristics of brain electrophysiological dynamic change. Results Based on the behavioral data, the repeated findings of analysis of variance on reaction time showed that both the main effect of the type of subjects[F(1,35)=4. 34,P<0. 05,η2=0. 11],and the main effect of attention span[F(1,35)=138. 75,P<0. 001,η2=0. 79] had statistical significance. The repeated analysis of variance on accuracy showed that the main effect of subjects type[F(1,35)= 4. 99,P<0. 05,η2=0. 13],and the main effect of attention span[F(1,35)=101. 83,P<0. 01,η2=0. 74] were significantly different. Under large and small attention span conditions, the children with Chinese language learning disability showed a longer time of reaction and a lower accuracy rate than the children in the control group. With the electroencephalograph( EEG) data and under large and small attention span conditions, the Chinese learning disability children showed enhanced P1 amplitude and reduced N1 amplitude. Conclusions There is a visual spatial attention span deficit in children with Chinese learning disability which may be caused by a weak prima-ry sensory processing ability and divided attention deficit.

ABSTRACT

Background Cellular autophagy is a non-apoptosis death form of tumor tissue.Research determined that arsenie trioxide (As2O3) leads to apoptosis of tumor cells. But whether As2O3 induce autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells or not is unclear. Objective This study was to assess the effects of As2O3 on autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells. Methods As2O3 with the concentration of 0,0.5,1.0,2.0,4.0 μmol/L was used to treat the SO-Rb50 cell line for 48 hours, and the growth and proliferation of SO-Rb50 cells were detected using MTT assay (A570).pGFP-LC3,a marker of autophagy, was constructed to transfer SO-Rb50 cells, and the cells were then divided into RPMI-1640 culture group (untreated group),As2O3 + RPMI-1640 culture group (As2O3 treated group) and rapamycin culture group (positive control group).Autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells was examined by laser confocal microscope and monodansylcadaverine (MDC) influorescence staining,respectively,48 hours following cell culture.Ultrastructural features of autophagy were examined with transmission electron microscope (TEM).The percentage of autophagy positive cells in different concentrations of As2O3 treated groups was calculated with flow cytometer. Results The A570 values of SO-Rb50 cells were 2.194±0.066,1.841 ±0.213,1.035±0.046,0.374±0.042 and 0.167±0.019 in 0,0.5,1.0,2.0,4.0 μmol/L As2O3 treated groups, with a significant difference among these 5 groups(F=547.636,P<0.05),and those of 0.5,1.0,2.0,4.0 μmol/L As2O3 treated groups were significantly reduced in comparison with untreated group (P =0.000).The positive granular spots for GFP-LC3 chimeric protein were seen to aggregate in autophagic vacuoles in the As2O3 treated group and positive control group, but diffuse cytoplasmic signal for GFP-LC3 was found in the untreated group.Normal ultrastructure of SO-Rb50 cells was exhibited in the untreated group, and many double-membrane-like bound vesicles and autlysosomes were documented in the As2O3 treated group and positive control group under the TEM.A lots of MDC fluorescence granule were found in the As2O3 treated group and positive control group rather than the untreated group.Flow cytometry showed that the percentages of SO-Rb50 cells were 0,15.6%,42.7%,57.9%,79.5% and 89.0% in the 0,0.5,1.0,2.0,4.0 μmol/L As2O3 groups and positive control group, respectively, showing a As2O3 concentration-dependent increase. Conclusions As2O3 can induce the autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells and inhibit the proliferation of SO-Rb50 cells.Autophagic response of SO-Rb50 cells appears prior to the nuclear change after exposed to As2O3.The degree of autophagy of SO-Rb50 cells is associated with As2O3 dose.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To evaluate the feasibility and the clinical practicality of the design about the hollowed titanium stick supporting the femoral head and preventing it from collapsing.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>From Jan.2003 to Jun.2007, 36 patients (46 hips) diagnosed as cystis degeneration of the femoral head were treated by surgical operation, including 20 males and 16 females with an average age of 40 years ranging from 18 to 56 years old, and the course of the disease was from 10 to 24 months (16 months on average). According to ARCO staging, there were 24 patients (34 hips) in NFH II, of which 11 hips were II a stage, 13 hips were II b stage and 10 hips were II c stage; there were 6 patients diagnosed as osteofibrous,4 patients as simple bone cyst and 2 patients as chondromyxoid fibroma. Under X-ray the percutaneous narrow core decompression and focus infection elimination were performed and supported the sclerotin under the cartilage with titanium stick. The patients were followed-up at the first, third, sixth, twelfth, twenty-fourth and thirty-sixth month after the operation. The clinical evaluation was done by X-ray and the indexes included stable, unstable and abortive. The data was analyzed by Fisher exact probility and the suviaval rate was analyzed by Kaplan-Meier suviaval curve using statistical soft ware SPSS13.5.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>There were no unstable or failure cases on each period from the 1st month to the 12th month after the operation, indicating that the supporting effect of the titanium stick was exact during 12 months after the operation. There were unstable and failure cases from the 12th month to the 24th month after the operation, which were mainly in stage NFH II c but the comparision of the stable rate in this period and 12 months after the operation had no obvious statistical differences (P>0.05) indicating that the supporting effect of the titanium stick was feasible during the stage. One of the unstable cases deteriorated and failed but there were no new unstable cases, both the stable rate and the unstable rate had no change and the failure rate rose on the 36th month after the operation. The compar- ision of the stable rate on each period after the operation had no obvious difference (P=0.197>0.05), which indicated that the supporting effect of the titanium stick was persistent. By the difference of the etiology the three-year survival rate of the relevant NFH II c pathological changes was the lowest-70% and the survival rate of the pathological changes induced by other etiological factors was 90.2%.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>The design about the hollowed titanium stick supporting the collapsed femoral head is feasible. Using the hollowed titanium stick to support the femoral head and prevent it from collapsing is pragmatic in the clinical and the effect is positive, however, when it comes to the NFH II c pathological changes, the choice should be made discreetly.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective To compare plasma levels of ANP in experimental and control groups and continuously explore the value of ANP in diagnosis and treatment of acute PTE. Methods Thirty guinea pigs were randomized to PTE group(n = 15) and control( n = 15) group. The plasma level of ANP was examined by radioimmunoassay. Moreover, pulmonary embolism(PE) was explored at dissection and on microscopic examination after PTE. Results (1)The plasma levels of ANP in the early phase of PTE group were significantly higher than those in control group(P<0.05). (2)The plasma levels of ANP after PTE were significantly higher than those before PTE( P<0.05). (3)In the late phase of PTE, the plasma levels of ANP in PTE group declined to normal levels, compared with control group, and there was no significant difference( P>0.05). Conclusion (1) ANP, as a vasodilatory factor, was involved in mechanism of PTE,especially in the early phase of acute PTE. (2)The levels of ANP in plasma played as a sensitive marker used to observe conditions and seriousness of PTE.

Objective To investigate the curative effect of brucellar spondylitis,so as to provide scientific proof for improving the curative level of the disease. Methods Epidemiological information was collected from 113 patients diagnosed as brucellar spondylitis, who were divided into 5 groups according to different drugs and drug combinations of doxycycline, gentamicin, sulfamethoxazole and rifampicin. Then the curative effect was investigated.Twenty-one patients who had greater paoas muscle abscess or Para vertebral abscess, intraspinal abscess of spinal canal, necrotic intervertebral disk and major osteolasia received the minimal invasive surgery and the focus removal surgery. Results The occurrence of the disease in female was much higher than that in male.Grazing and breeding beasts was the principal route of infection.Lumbars was mostly involved.they usually was infected in the adjacent 2 piece.L4 was the most common and seriuous one.The curative effect of doxycycline group was better than that without doxycycline(72.60% vs 35.00%,X2=15.14,P<0.05).Doxycyeline+gentamicin+sulfamethoxazole was reeommended as the first choice. However, the curative effect did not increase despi~course of the treatment prolonged. The heMing rate and effective rate after 1 course was 52.21%(59/113)and 92.04%(104/113).that after 2 courses 58.41%(66/113)and 95.58%(108/113),that after 3 courses 59.29%(67/113)and 95.58%(108/113).The healing rate in different course did not present differences(P>0.05).21 patients undergoing surgery were followed-up,12 patients were after 2 years and 9 patients were between 1-2 years. The healing rate was 95.24%(20/21),1 case was healed basically, the effective rate was 100%.None reoccurred. Conclusions There are characterized features in clinical epidemiology of the brucell spondylitis.Long term, adequate in dosage, combination and multi-approach use of antibiotics is the most reliable way to treat and prevent it from recurring. But fof the patients soitable for surgery.the minimal invasive surgery or the focus removal could shorten the course of therapy, decrease the complications and increase the cure rate.

ABSTRACT

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To investigate the status of dental caries in the human of Tang dynasty.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>All teeth in 62 human skulls of Tang dynasty excavated from the Chang'an county in Xi'an city were examined and analyzed by statistics. The difference of prevalence in different group including age, sex and tooth position was tested with Chi-square test.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>The prevalence of dental caries was 62.9%. And there were 92 caries teeth, which was 14.6% of the whole teeth. The root caries (33.3%) was more than the occlusal caries (28.7%). The most frequent recorded caries were the third molar, followed by the second molar, then the first molar. There was no significant difference between male and female.</p><p><b>CONCLUSIONS</b>The dental caries was popular in human of Tang dynasty, but the prevalence lowers than the modern people. And with the human evolution and the improvement of the social productivity, the prevalence of dental caries was gradually ascending.</p>

ABSTRACT

Objective: To study the affection of immobilization stress (IMS) on mice splenic lymphocytic function. Methods:The proliferation of lymphocytes was examined by MTT, and intracellular[Ca2+] was examined by fluorescence probe, Fura-2/AM, membrane of lymphocytes IL-2 receptor(mIL-2R) and cell cycle were examined by flow cytometry. Results; The end of IMS was found to be the lowest proliferation response after IMS, at the same time mIL-2R expression was impaired. Analysis of cell cycle showed the proliferation of splenocytes from IMS mice might be bloched in G2/M phases. Intracellular[Ca2+] was significant increased after IMS. Conclusion: IMS may induce the disfunction of lymphocytes and immunosuppression.
